Capture and download HTTP Archive (.har) files

Last modified: Tuesday November 15, 2022.

When troubleshooting issues where the Alta Video user interface does not seem to work as expected, it can be useful for the Avigilon Alta Support and Engineering teams if you provide an HTTP Archive file (.har file). HTTP Archive files contain details of the HTTP calls made by Alta Video in your browser, and the responses that are returned from your Alta Video video management system.

Because HTTP Archive files (.har files) capture all HTTP traffic from your browser, it is possible that personally identifiable information (PII) is also captured.

Follow the process in Obfuscate sensitive personal information in a .har file to remove any personal information before submitting the file to Avigilon Alta Support.

Task — Gather an HTTP Archive file from Chrome

  1. Open the Google Chrome web browser.
  2. Open the Chrome Developer tools by either pressing F12, or by clicking the "three dots" icon on the top right of the browser and selecting More tools | Developer tools.
The Chrome Developer tools opens in a pane within the browser.
  3. Select the Network tab from within the Developer tools pane. Ensure the red recording icon is enabled — this indicates that the data being passed is being recorded.
  4. Log into your Alta Video deployment, and follow the procedure to replicate the issue you are experiencing.
As you interact with Alta Video, one or more entries appear in the Developer tools pane.
  5. When you have successfully reproduced your Alta Video issue, right-click on one of the entries in the Developer tools, and click Save all as HAR with content.
The Save as dialog opens: select a name and a suitable location to save the file.
  6. Log out of Alta Video, to ensure that the cookies used to authenticate your Alta Video session are invalidated.
  7. Follow the process detailed in Obfuscate sensitive personal information in a .har file to remove any sensitive information from the captured HTTP information.
  8. Raise a support case with Avigilon Alta Support by following Raise an Avigilon Alta support case
