Last modified: Tuesday February 10, 2026.

The Clips tool shows the bookmarked clips and shared links created from video recorded by your Alta Video deployment.

  • Bookmarks: Video clips made available to other uses for review, for example, a system administrator or another shift operator.
  • Shared links: Video clips shareable with people that are not Alta Video users.

Key Features

  • Centralized library: View tables of saved content filtered by "Only my saved clips," "Clips shared with me," or "All clips" to easily locate specific evidence.
  • Video playback: Click any entry to open a preview pane that displays the video clip, its corresponding timeline, and general information about the event.
  • Multi-camera viewing: If a bookmark contains footage from multiple cameras, you can view them sequentially in a full-screen layout or simultaneously in a 2x2 grid.
  • Edit capabilities: Modify existing bookmarks or links by adjusting the start and end times, changing the name and description, or disabling footage from specific cameras included in the clip.
  • Access management: Change which users or user groups have permission to view specific bookmarked clips.
  • Export: Download video files directly from the Clips tool in .mp4 or .ava format for offline storage or evidence handover. You can also password-protect these exports.
  • Convert to Link: Quickly generate an external link from an existing internal bookmark to share it with third parties, such as law enforcement or insurance adjusters.
  • Retention management: Define how long a clip should be kept. Bookmarked content has a retention policy independent of the camera's standard recording settings, allowing you to keep critical footage for a specific period or indefinitely until manually deleted.

The bookmark and shared link recordings comply with the retention criteria set when the bookmark or shared link is created, not the Configuration profile for the camera storing the video.

For example, if a camera is configured to save the video for 7 days, but a recording is set to Bookmark until: Manually deleted, the saved clip is kept after other camera recordings are deleted. Check your corporate policies on video data retention before creating bookmarked clips or shared links.
