Share links to video clips

Last modified: Thursday February 02, 2023.

Occasionally, you might need to share a video clip with someone who does not have access to your Alta video security systems, for example, because you have identified some suspicious activity that you need to bring to the attention of your Human Resources department.

Alta Video enables you to select the clips of interest and generate a link you can share with the relevant people. When they follow this link, they can view the video without needing access credentials for Alta Video.

The shared video is kept on your Avigilon Alta video security systems unless you allow the recipient to download the video clips locally. All communications between your Alta video security systems and the Alta Cloud are end-to-end encrypted.

Only send links to approved people that need to view the selected video clips. Ensure you comply with all local regulations and corporate policies regarding the sharing of video footage.

Prerequisites

Locate the video clip of interest from Video view Playback, Search, or from Alarms.

Task — Share a video link

  1. Log in to your Alta Video and navigate to the tool or Pop-up alert of interest.
  2. To enable the External link features:
    • Video view — make sure you are in Playback mode.
    • Search — define all your search parameters and then Play button open or Add devices button select the video clips to be linked.
    • Devices — select a camera and maximize the video thumbnail to display the Share and save button Share or save button.
    • Alarms — maximize the video thumbnail to display the Share and save button Share or save button.
  3. Using your selected tool, locate the video clips of interest.
  4. Click the Export and External link button Share or save button and then choose Create external link button.
  5. If multiple cameras are shown, hover over the thumbnails, and click Close button to deselect any camera views that are not of interest.
  6. To share video from additional cameras, add them by clicking Export button Add devices.
  7. Select the required timeframe by entering the Start and End times. Alternatively, hover and drag the Clip start time handle and Clip end time handle handles to adjust the clip to include the portion of video you want.
  8. Click the Play button play button to preview the clip.
    1. Adjust the clip boundaries as needed.
    2. If you are sharing video from multiple cameras, select Sync export timeframe to use the same Start and End times.
    3. The minimum clip length that can be shared is 10 seconds.
  9. Enter a name for the clip.
  10. Optionally, enter a description of the video.
  11. Optionally, click Video link to copy the link address.
  12. Select Available until, after which time the link can no longer be viewed.

Because the Available until setting overrides the Delete recordings after (days) setting in the camera configuration profile, the recording might be stored longer than expected. Check your corporate policies on video data retention before creating bookmarked clips or shared links.

  13. Optionally, select Allow viewer to download.
  14. Optionally, to enable the recipient of the clip to listen to any recorded audio, select Include audio. For more information about recording audio, see About: Audio options in Aware.
  15. If needed, configure the password that must be entered to be able to view the video clip.
  16. Click Create.
The link is copied to your computer clipboard.
  17. Paste the link into your preferred communication tool (email, Slack, or similar) and send it to the intended recipient.

When the recipient follows the link, they are taken to a browser showing the Avigilon Alta Online video player.
