Network and power resiliency
Last modified: Wednesday February 19, 2025.
Alta Protect requires a performant local network, internet connection, and Power over Ethernet supply (PoE) to function correctly.
Network outages
Alta cameras do not have built-in backup connectivity.
Without an internet connection, the system cannot trigger alarms, and cameras cannot communicate with the Protect software or remote monitoring centers.
Depending on your deployment configuration, cameras might still record video footage. See Alta camera bandwidth usage, video quality, and video storage.
Power outages
Cameras do not function without power, and the system cannot trigger alarms.
Mitigating outages
It is your responsibility to ensure network, internet, and power resiliency:
- You should connect key system components to a network with backup cellular connectivity and UPS power supplies with battery backups.
- You must configure Alta Video rules that notify emergency contacts about connectivity issues. See Create rules for System issues and Create rules for camera issues.
- To set emergency contacts, see Add an emergency contact to a zone.
- Ideally, choose network devices and power supplies that send notifications for connectivity or power failures.
- If supported, connect the devices via the Alta Video API and send notifications from Alta Protect to the relevant emergency contacts and operators. See Introducing: Alta Video API and the Alta Video API reference.
